This page will grow to be a definitive list of free/affordable software and resources useful in the development of a Symphony site. Please add to it if you know of anything that is useful and missing from here. Try not to duplicate items, and state whether they are PC, Mac, or multi-platform compatible. Also, don’t post unless it’s free or costs less than $100AUD.

Editors

  • Macintosh:
    • CSSEdit - One of the best CSS editors for Mac. CSSEdit 2 is even better, infact it’s superb. (Shareware)
    • BBEdit - An everlast one. (Commercial)
    • TextMate - One of the best editors available. Not free, but certainly worth it. (Commercial)
    • Textwrangler - Formerly known as BBEdit Lite. (Free)
    • SEEdit - (X)HTML Editor for Macintosh. (Commercial)
    • skEdit - Simple, flexible, powerful text editor for the web. (Commercial)
    • Smultron - Open-source editor with macro and snippet functionality. (Free)
    • Xylescope - An innovative CSS tool for analysis, debugging and fine-tuning. (Commercial)
  • Windows:
    • CSSVista - Edit your CSS code live in both, IE and Firefox, simultaneously. (Free)
    • TopStyle - The Definitive CSS program. Commercial, but Lite version is free (Commercial/Free)
    • CSS Tab Designer - Nifty list based menus for lazy people
    • Ace HTML - Well regarded editor. (Free)
    • AlleyCode - Good editor which can handle PHP, HTML, XML and CSS. (Free)
    • Eclipse - Develop just about anything with Eclipse. Open-source. (Free)
    • Intype - Intype is a powerful and intuitive code editor for Windows with lightning fast response. It is easily extensible and customizable. (Alpha Version, Free; Final will be ~30$)
    • Crimson Editor - Syntax highlighting for HTML, C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab and LaTeX. (Free)
    • PSPad - freeware unicode developer editor; many languages supported, including CSS, (X)HTML, PHP, XML/XSLT, etc. (Free)
  • Multi-platform:
    • Aptana - Some say the best alternative to Dreamweaver. (Free) Oxygen XML Editor has a compatible Eclipse plug-in
    • jEdit - jEdit is a cross platform, programmer’s text editor written in Java. (Free)
    • NVU - Decent HTML editor which also handles CSS. Dreamweaver clone with built-in FTP. (Free)

XML/XSLT/XPath

  • Macintosh:
    • TestXSLT - An application for learning and applying XSLT transformation. (Free)
    • XSLPallete - XSLT 2.0, XPath 2.0, and XQuery 1.0 debugging palette for your favorite Mac OS X text editor. (Free)
    • AquaPath - Evaluate XPath 2.0 expressions against any XML document and view the result sequence in a dynamic, intuitive tree representation. (Free)
    • XML Nanny - Graphically parse and validate local or remote XML documents against DTD, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG, and Schematron schemas. (Free)
    • AquaXSL - A basic XSLT 2.0 authoring/debugging tool. (Free)
    • TeXMLMate - Check XML and XHTML documents for Well-Formedness and Validity while editing them in TextMate with support for DTD, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG, Schematron, XInclude, XML Catalog, and XPath 2.0 Visualizer. (Free)
  • Windows:
    • Cooktop - XSLT Editor - An editor and development environment for XML, DTD, and XSLT documents. (Free)
    • Eclipse XML - XSLT Editor - A plugin for the eclipse IDE adding XML / XSLT editing facilities. (Free)
    • XML Copy Editor - XML Copy Editor is a fast, free, validating XML / XSLT editor (also available for Linux). (Free)
  • Multi-platform:
    • Editix - Professional XML Editor and XSLT Debugger. (Commercial)
    • Exchanger XML Lite - freeware for non-commercial environment (commercial version available); features XML editing, XSLT transformations, project management, an SVG viewer and conversion, etc. (Free)
    • OxygenXML - Very Advanced XML and XSL(T) Editor (Debugger, Refactoring) with tons of features running on Windows, Linux, OS X and Eclipse (Plugin). Academic and Personal licenses start at $63AUD|$48US|38€. (Commercial)

FTP Clients

  • Macintosh:
    • Cyberduck - Wonderful open-source program. (Free)
    • CrossFTP - A powerful multi-tabbed FTP client. (Free)
    • Fetch - A solid FTP application. (Commercial)
    • Fugu - Another wonderful open source program. (Free)
    • Interarchy - John Gruber’s favourite FTP program. (Commercial)
    • Transmit - One of the most popular FTP clients. (Commercial)
    • Yummy FTP - Another FTP client (who bite the icon?) (Commercial)
    • Captain FTP - Yet another FTP client for the Mac. Seems to be the only one to support FTP over SSL. (Commercial)
  • Windows:
    • Filezilla - Fast and reliable FTP client. (Free)
    • CrossFTP - A powerful multi-tabbed FTP client. (Free)
    • SmartFTP - Free for personal, educational and non-profit organization usage. (Shareware)
    • CuteFTP - It’s cute, apparently! (Commercial)
    • BulletProof FTP - FTP for Windows. Good and cheap! (Commercial)
    • WS_FTP - The industry-leading FTP program, apparantly. Transfer anything, anywhere. (Commercial)
    • NVU - Decent HTML editor which also handles CSS. Dreamweaver clone with built-in FTP. (Free)
  • Multi-platform:
    • PuTTY - PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms. (Free)
    • FireFTP - FireFTP is a free FTP client for Firefox. (Free)

Other

  • Macintosh:
    • SpamStopper - Simple but effective way to keep email addresses hidden from email harvesting spiders. (Free) Site currently down.
    • Code Collector - Store code snippets for reference. (Free)

Local Development

  • Macintosh:
    • MAMP - Local server including PHP and MySQL. Easy to use and setup. It’s fool-proof. (Free)
    • Headdress - Host multiple virtual websites on your local network. Plays nicely with MAMP, be sure to check out the video. (Shareware)
  • Windows:
    • EasyPHP - Very easy to setup, better then XAMPP imho (Free)
    • XAMPP - Decent server, can be complex to setup. If you’re new, try EasyPHP instead (Free)

Password Management

  • Macintosh:
    • LittleSecrets - The encrypted notepad. An excellent application. (Commercial)
    • Password Assistant - Password Assistant triggers the Mac OS X Password Assistant dialog any time you need it. (Free)
    • PasswordWallet - Add a record on your Macintosh, synchronize with your Palm compatible PDA. (Shareware)
    • 1passwd - Password Manager and Form Filler for Mac OS X. (Commercial/Free)
    • Wallet - Waterfall Wallet is a simple and easy to use password storage application. (Shareware)
  • Windows:
    • KeyPass - KeePass is an open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. (Free)
  • Multi-platform:
    • Data Guardian - A customizable, secure database manager that allows you to store passwords, serial numbers, mailing lists or anything you want to put in it. (Commercial)
    • KeePassX - It has a light interface, is cross platform and published under the terms of the GNU. (Free)
    • Web Confidential - Allows Web surfers to store URLs, user IDs, and passwords in one secure location. (Shareware)

Templates

  • OSWD - Large selection of free templates.
  • OpenDesigns - New gallery of free designs.
  • Layout Gala - 40 of the most useful bare-bones layouts.
  • Six shooter - Good designs, mostly suited for blogs/publishing sites.
  • Tristar media - Pretty good, although some missing. Search OSWD for “tristar”.

Firefox Extensions

  • CSSViewer - Hover over elements on the page to reveal their CSS properties.
  • X-Ray - Display the source on the actual page.
  • Firefox Developer extension - You really shouldn’t be without this. Essential.
  • XML Developer Extension - XML Tools for Firefox.
  • MeasureIt - On-screen ruler.
  • ColorZilla - Pick RGB, HTML, Hex colour values from the page.
  • JSView - View external CSS and JS files.
  • Load Time Analyzer - Measure and graph how long web pages take to load in Firefox.
  • XPath Checker - Interactive editor for XPath expressions, edit the XPath expression and it incrementally updates the results.
  • FireBug - A superb Firefox extension! Let’s you inspect and change your HTML/CSS on the fly. Visualize CSS metrics, monitor network, JavaScript Debugging and a lot more!
  • Screengrab! or more info here - saves the entire webpage as image (JPG or PNG), not just what you can see on screen; very useful!

Graphic Editors

  • The Font Thing - The best Windows font manager I’ve ever used. No longer developed, but still works fine.
  • Gimp - Nifty open-source graphics editor. (Free)
  • GimpShop - Just like Gimp, but has been abused to look more like Photoshop! (Free)
  • Inkscape - Very decent vector/SVG tool akin to Illustrator, but smaller, faster and easier to learn/use. (Free)
  • Scribus Brilliant page layout program much like InDesign and QuarkXpress. Can handle XML so you can dump out the printed page contents and bring them into your Symphony site as easy as pie.
  • Artweaver - Paint program. Imagine if ArtRage looked like Photoshop... Windows
  • ThumbPlug - Lets you see TGA file thumbnails in windows. why didnt M$ do this? Windows
  • Paint .NET - Excellent free paint package. MS Paint on steroids. Windows

Screen Capture

  • Wink - Is a free open-source screen capture with many output formats. Designed for making tutorials/screencasts. Windows/Linux
  • Fast Stone Screen Capture - Excellent screen capture (stills) utility. Windows
  • CamStudio v2.0 - Nifty screen recorder. Free and open-source. Windows
  • iShowU - Great little screen cap program for Mac. Cheap and fast. About $27AUD. Mac
  • Screengrab! - is a Firefox extension which saves the entire webpage as image (JPG or PNG), not just what you can see on screen; very useful!
